Be honest when dealing with employees, customers and clients – this is extremely important. You cannot be an effective leader if you cannot be trusted. As your leadership skills improve, you should always try to set an example by being trustworthy and honest. When your colleagues see this in you, they’ll become even more loyal. Use synergy when thinking. Know exactly what kinds of goals you want to reach personally. Have your business goals clearly defined, too. You should be sure that these things are aligned well and perhaps even overlap. You should work on both simultaneously. When you can’t, people will see your lack of passion.

Take ownership of your statements. As a leader, responsibility for what you say and do always falls on your shoulders. You’re the leader of the company and that means whatever you do is going to symbolize the business. Take responsibility for your mistakes and learn from them. There is nobody to fix the issues but you.

You must be able to communicate effectively and clearly with others. Your team should have all necessary information they will need in order to complete a project. Check in here and there to make sure everyone is on track.

Present yourself in a way that you’d like your employees to present themselves. Your emotional volatility will pass to your team. Expect others to show laziness or dishonesty if this is what you display. If you treat your employees with respect, they’ll to do the same.

As you lead, concentrate on people and everything else will fall into place. Inspire them and encourage them to be motivated. Rather than focusing so much on making sure every single task gets done, put your energy into motivating your team to do their best.

Lots of effective leaders focus on a single question. Do you think you are comfortable? If you’re comfortable, then you’re probably playing it too safe. It’s good to be uncomfortable by taking risks and pushing the envelope. Well thought out risk-taking can fire up your passion, promote optimism and keep you from getting stale as a leader.
