Become the strong leader of a successful business. Make sure you hire people who will advance your business goals. Preferably, this means people who are smart, can solve problems, and most importantly, have some experience in your business field. Make sure you check references and do proper research so that you don't get scammed by someone with a fake resume and a silver tongue. Make sure to engage people as a leader. You must learn how to motivate, involve, and excite others. Inspire them to engage their passions, strengths, skills, and creativity in the tasks at hand. Do what you can to acknowledge and appreciate each person's contributions and efforts. You should make them all feel like they did something to move the project forward. Never belittle your coworkers. Your subordinates will never respect you if you do not treat them with respect. Remember that you are not better than they are. Consider yourself fortunate to be a leader. Treating your coworkers as you would want to be treated will go a long way in developing a cooperative team. In order to be a great leader, you must be able to communicate your vision to your team. Explain clearly what the common goal is, and instill a vision of success in the group. Getting everyone working together on something they all believe in cements your leadership role in the group. When trying to be a good leader, it's important to be truthful about the situation. If something isn't working out as planned, let your team know. If you need to change something, tell them. Your team needs to know what is going on, whether it be good news or bad. Tenacity is easily among the more critical leadership traits. When things don't go as planned, the team will turn to you. You should focus on a positive outcome rather than any obstacles that may be in the way. When you show tenacity, your team will be motivated to reach their goals. Don't be overbearing when your subordinates are learning a new process. Instead, ask them how they learn best. You might be surprised to find out that some of your subordinates want direct instruction, while others want to take a more trial-and-error approach to learning. Unless there are specific reasons why accommodating them would be problematic, try to allow for both types of learning. Good leaders must finish the job. You hear many leaders brag about their projects, but many haven't actually finished them. Those that don't genuinely finish can lose the confidence of their clients. You must set goals and see your tasks through to completion. Remember that nothing is entirely useful until it's finished. Take care of yourself. When you're a leader, it can be very easy for you to lose yourself. However, it's important for you to remember that you are not going to be much use if you never sleep and never eat. Make sure that you are caring for yourself so you can best care for those you are leading. Build play time into work time. Not every moment of the day needs to be filled with productivity. Smart leadership will find ways for employees to let go every once in a while. It can be an outdoor activity or an indoor game room, or something else entirely. You'll see that your employees will respond positively. Listen to your subordinates; this is extremely important for a leader. This involves taking goals and ideas and taking them in some directions you would not have thought of by yourself. Use what they say to help you push your business to the next level. Dress the part. There's a perception to leadership. If you look the role, people will respond to your leadership much more positively and openly. If you dress poorly, it'll be a tougher road to climb instilling leadership. It's possible still, but make it easier on yourself and be the best dressed person in the office. Now that you understand some of the things that are necessary in becoming an effective leader, you can go into work with more confidence.
